PAF wins the 1st AFP Cyber Exercise

The Philippine Air Force emerged as the overall champion during the 1st AFP Cyber Exercise dubbed as “Intercept Foxtrot” held on September 25-27, 2018 hosted by the PAF through the initiative of the Office of the Assistant Chief of Air Staff for Communications, OA-6 and the 950th Communication Electronics Information Systems Group at Colonel Jesus Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.

The three-day event was composed of a series of lectures concerning cyber security from academic, military and corporate experts. Five teams from different cyber units of Major Branches of Service of the AFP competed in the exercise that aimed to test the vulnerability, network security, cyber-attack capabilities and preparedness and offensive and defensive cyber-attack strategies in a joint operation.

During the lectures on day 1, Subject Matter Experts were invited. Engineer Arlan Castillo of RIVAN IT, one of the leading IT schools in the PH discussed on the academic side while LTC ROLAND J ONG PA (GSC) Reserved, from Fire Eye Singapore LTD, discussed cyber security threat landscape in the military aspect.

On day 2, which was the game proper called “Capture the Flag”, the mechanics were properly stated by the event sponsors, mainly, the Cybersecurity Philippines-CERT headed by Mr Emmanuel Altarcado. From there, the participants needed to identify the vulnerable system provided by the CSP-CERT and from that vulnerable machine, the flags or hashes were in place. Every team should protect their own services for defense points and hack opponents for attack points.

On its closing ceremony, the PAF team composed of SSg Jaen, SSg Mercado, Sgt Velacruz, Mr King Castillo and Mr Joas Cruz, all from the 950th CEISG were announced as the overall champion during the competition. It was attended by the Chief of Air Staff, MGEN ALLEN T PAREDES AFP as the Guest of Honor. MGEN PAREDES congratulated the winners and also the teams who participated in the event.

All participants and facilitators were given due recognition and awards as well as the sponsors of the event such as Cyber Security Philippines –CERT, RIVAN IT, Maralabs and Pocketworks. The winning team Philippine Air Force also received a Plaque of Recognition, Jackets and cash prize.

Activities like this are very much needed in today’s generation. The PAF through the 950th CEISG and the OA-6 is hoping that such event will be conducted regularly in the AFP to be able to be more prepared in the real cyber security landscape. (Philippine Air Force)
